11 Raw, Real & Honest Poems About Addiction

11 Raw, Real & Honest Poems About Addiction

Addiction is no joke for those suffering, family members, friends, and partners.

It strips away at someone’s soul and strips those who love them to their skin and bones. Whilst I have never experienced addiction myself, I have loved those who have and witnessed firsthand the chaos, devastation, and pain left in their wake. Whilst we may not be able to control another’s journey, we can pray for them along the way.

Here is a collection of poetry about addiction to make you feel less alone today. Whether you’re a suffering addict, a family member, friend, or partner, there is hope that you can find your way.

Poetry About AdDICTION

1. Why Do you keep relapsing? - anonymous

“Why do you keep relapsing?”
“Well,
It’s like your mind gives you a hundred reasons
To be happy
And yet your depression says
Wait.
Here’s a reason to be sad.
Every single thing that’s wrong,
That you’ve done wrong
In your entire life
All of the memories
And then that voice overrules
Everything.”

2. Addicted - Henley Jean

I cannot bear to admit
even just inside my head,
those sickening words.
Though, it is the first step,
so, I must come to terms
with the truth I couldn’t predict,
I say it now: I am an addict.

~on learning to admit it to yourself

poem by – Henley Jean

3. Addict two - jadine lydia

pierce my skin
with a needle so sharp
let the undercurrents of love
flow through my heart.

4. Addiction – Anthony Kiedes

When you’re using drugs, you’re driven by this mystical black energy, a force inside you that just won’t quit.

And the weaker you get, the more you feed into that energy, and the more it f**ks with you.

When your spirit becomes dark and your lifestyle becomes dark, your existence is susceptible to infiltration by dark spirits.

I’ve seen it so many times with addicts.

You can see that they’re controlled by dark energy, the way they look, their appearance, their voice, their behavior, it’s not them.

quote by –  Anthony Kiedes

5. Addiction - Mirtha Michelle

I was taught that drugs were bad.
I was taught to stay away,
To never try them, not once,
For drugs would dim my light.
I should never sacrifice my smile,
Especially for a temporary high.
When I met you,
I strayed away.
I took a hit,
And it’s never been the same.
I must have injected you,
In my thickest vein.
My lungs must have inhaled you,
And it reached my brain.
My senses are now your slaves,
I seem to relapse every given day.
Because you live within me,
Like an addiction,
I cannot break from.
Every particle of you
Has mixed with my blood.
Every artery of mine,
Pumps your love.

poem by –  Mirtha Michelle

6. Adrenaline high - Jadine Lydia

The thing is,
I can’t even hate you.
Because my love
and fear of losing you
keeps me on an adrenaline high –
i have nothing left for myself,
it’s about keeping you alive.

original poem by – Jadine Lydia

7. Dear Addiction, Dear Dad

Dear Addiction,
I always wondered what it was like being held so close.

Dear Dad,
I hate being what alcohol was for you
but even your daughter’s own voice
never amounted to its comfort.
and the love a deadbeat gives in
always amounted to my pain.
so you chose it over us.
but I want you to know –
I am so not proud of you
for trying to be better,
to make sure there comes a day
I could look you in the eyes —
and all you “did”
and not only recognize you as the liquified devil
that had once taken you away from me.

8. A poem for when someone you love is struggling with addiction - AlliE Michelle

Every time you look to ease your pain
Numbing yourself with that vice
You claim has no effect
Know that I feel everything you don’t
Know that every justification that pours out of your mouth
Is the poison I choke on
It took me a while to realize
The magic you showed me was only a sleight of hand
You act like you’re hard
Like the world has no effect on you
But the soft hearts around you are crumbling
From your effect on them
They told me all you needed was a reason to live
And yet the teacher who preaches the medicine he could never swallow
Is only a con artist
Now that, I’ll admit, you’re the best at
You even fooled yourself
They told me I became your reason to live
And I felt the weight of that crush my spine
Even though I knew it was a lie
You have no reason to live
Because addiction is like watching someone you love
Stab their own heart in slow motion
While you have no choice but to watch them bleed out
Until their very last breath

9. Yellow Being - Jadine Lydia

i see the yellow in you,
even though
you spit
fire at my skin.

i see the yellow in you,
even though
you spit
fire at my skin
and puncture my lungs.

i see the yellow in you,
even though
you spit
fire at my skin,
puncture my lungs
and leave me bruised.

i see the yellow in you,
even though
you spit
fire at my skin,
puncture my lungs
and leave me bruised,

because you are hurting baby
you are screaming baby
and so i bite my tongue
and choose –
to wrap your wounds with love.

extract from –  ‘Simple Truths’

10. Escape Velocity - Limes Carma

I used to think that higher meant escape,
That feeling weightless was the only way.
I’d chase whatever helped me lose my shape,
Until the night consumed another day.

I thought each fix would find the joy I’d long forgotten,
But clarity would hit — so sharp and sudden.

Chasing every high will have you
digging at rock bottom.

11. Clean - Adolfo Vasquez

Everything inspires me
From the light shinning in from a crack window
To the dust floating in the light.
Seeing life’s glow
Sunrays on my toes
Heighten Sense.
Feeling love to the extreme
Only from living clean.

poem by – Adolfo Vasquez
