3 Simple Steps to Make Big Life-Changing Decisions

Big life decisions can be extremely daunting. It’s not so much the decision that is the problem, it’s often the question – what if we make the wrong choice?
As a self-confessed indecision-maker, I write this blog in the hope that what has helped me will help you too. Below you will find three simple steps to help you make big life decisions with confidence and clarity.
Plus, you will find a little extra juice about human design and how this can help you make game-changing, positive life decisions.
So, whether you are looking to change your job, begin or end a relationship or start a completely new chapter in your life, allow these tips to help you let go of mental loops and make the best possible decision for you at this time.
How to Make Big Life Decisions with Minimal Stress
1. Talk through your options with a trusted friend
When going through major life transits, speaking to trusted friend can help your find clarity. Share your concerns & ask them:
- What do they think you should do?
When you ask for an opinion and hear the feedback, it is not unusual to feel an instant gut response. This could be one of two things:
– Relief > if they reflect back the answer your heart was secretly wanting.
– Disheartened > if they say the option you didn’t want to hear.
In this case, the wisdom is not your friends response. It is in the magic of using their response as a catalyst for you own internal guidance system to kick in & show you the truth.
2. List the best & worse case scenarios for each outcome
List the best & worst outcomes for each of your options. Whilst this may sound scary, addressing the worst possible outcome will ironically, set your mind at ease. If you know the worst of the worst, you will no longer be operating from a state of uncertainty.
In most cases, your mind will conjure up ridiculous ‘worst case scenarios’ through fear – it is highly unlikely that these will come to fruition. By getting this out in the open, the only way is up. And who knows, the best possible outcomes may even inspire your decision.
3. Give yourself an extended timeline
Major life decisions can be extremely stressful. If you find yourself tripping up over the same questions & mental loops, give yourself a break. Stop ‘trying’ to make a decision & give yourself time.
Set yourself an extended timeline: one, two or three months. When you are struggling to make a decision, it often means you do not yet have enough information to make that decision.
Allow your mind to rest & focus on other things for a while. Reduce the pressure and let the situation unfold. During this time you may receive more information to help you make your decision with clarity & confidence.
Other Tips For Making Life-Changing Decisions
Explore your human design
If you are interested in the metaphysical or spiritual realms, you may also want to check out your human design. I discovered the human design system a few years ago, and it has been game-changing. After learning that I was an ‘emotional projector’ my whole life made sense.
Human design types include manifestors, generators, manifesting generators, projectors and reflectors. Within your design you also have an authority and a strategy. Your ‘authority’ determines how you can make the most positive, aligned decisions, whilst your ‘strategy’ determines how you can approach life with the least amount of resistance.
Your human design authority
Once you know your human design type, strategy and authority, you can use this information to make super-aligned, easy life-decisions in the following ways.
Here is a sneak peek into how your authority can guide you through making the best life decisions.
1. Emotional authority
This is the most common type, and decisions are best made after riding out your emotional wave. For you, clarity will come over time and you should avoid making big decisions in the heat of the moment, whether it is high or low.
2. Sacral authority
Sacral authority can be found in generators and manifesting generators. If you have this type of authority you can best rely on gut responses that may feel like a ‘uh-huh’ or a ‘uh-uh.’ Often, you will know how you feel about something fairly quickly – you can rely on your gut feeling to make aligned life decisions.
3. Splenic Authority
As someone with a splenic authority, you are likely to receive instant but subtle intuitive hits. Similarly, to those with a sacral authority you can trust your gut instincts, but even more so – you can trust your first impression. However, this type of authority speaks quietly so tuning into your body’s signals is key.
4. Ego Authority (Heart/Will)
This type of authority can be seen in two forms, the ego-manifestor and the ego-projector. This authority is driven by willpower and your personal desires.
In essence, you can make the best decisions by aligning with what you truly want. Your best decisions may come when you ask ‘does my hearts desires feel excited by this?’
5. Self-Projected Authority
This authority is found in self-projected projectors. If you have this authority, talking things out may help as your truth comes when you speak and hear your own wisdom and clarity.
6. Mental/Environmental Authority
This type of authority is found in reflectors and some projectors. If you have this type you can make aligned life decisions by making sure you are in the right environment, with trusted friends and family as sounding boards. For you, aligned life decisions may come from receiving external clarity, rather than an internal knowing.
7. Lunar Authority
The lunar authority type is unique to reflectors. If you have a lunar authority, you can benefit by waiting a full 28-day lunar cycle before making big life decisions. This helps you to align with natural rhythms, cosmic timing and will allow you to gain clarity slowly and naturally.
How human design has helped me
Whilst you can take the above with a pinch of salt, human design gave me the roadmap to making the most authentic, aligned life decisions. I learnt that as someone with an ‘emotional authority’ I need to ride the waves (sometimes for weeks!) before the pendulum stops swinging and I find absolute clarity. Whilst, this doesn’t sound like too much fun, it gave me the permission slip to stop making rash decisions and feel into every outcome; ultimately this has enabled me to make some truly exciting, aligned life-decisions that feel good for my soul.
As a projector, my ‘strategy’ is to ‘wait for the invitation.’ When I started living by this strategy, my whole life changed. I realised that every misaligned decision in my life had occurred after I had pushed for an outcome and made a rash decision. However, most of my BRILLIANT life decisions had occurred when I went with the flow, and waited for invitations to find me.
How to Make Big, Life-Changing Decisions
When it comes to making life-changing decisions, there is no ‘one-size fits all’ approach. Whether you choose to talk through your options with a trusted friend, list the best and worst possible outcomes or simply give yourself some grace with an extended timeline; each one of these tips can reduce overwhelm and help you find clarity with your decision.
